The area was settled in 1693 by William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, and it was actually the founder's first neighborhood. Oak Lane was first known as Milestown and flourished as farmland. The neighborhood is well known for the Milestown School, built in 1745 and donated in 1761 by Joseph Armitage. In 1866, the building was granted to the city of Philadelphia for a public school. Today the area contains many older style houses built from the 1920s into the 1930s. During that time people looked to move out of the crowed city.
