The modern history of Matamoras began when the borough was incorporated in 1905. The community was named after a city in Mexico. The area is home to about 2,500 people and there have been significant changes over the years. A great example of the development of Matamoras is the airport. The Merrill-Ronne Airport was opened in 1930 on the eastern side of the community. It was named for two aviators who were well known in the area. The airport consisted of three runways and was fairly busy. During World War II the airport was used to train pilots. Unfortunately the airport closed in the late 1970's. Residents came up with an interesting plan on how to use the space and a park was built. The Matamoras Recreation-Airport Park was developed to provide enriching recreational activities for residents and visitors.
