Hanover Township is in Northeastern Pennsylvania and is located in the middle of Luzerne County. It was founded in the 1770's by Captain Lazarus Stewart of Connecticut and was one of the first townships of the county formed. It has a population of approximately 11,448 and is made up of the villages of Askam, Breslau, Buttonwood, Dundee, Hanover Green, Iona, Korn Krest, Lee Park, Lower Askam, Lyndwood, Newtown, and Preston. The township is part of the Hanover Area School District. Coal mining became a major industry in and around Hanover Township in the 1900's. Ashley Planes, a historic freight cable railroad in Hanover and Fairview Townships, was listed on the national Register of Historic Places in 1980.
Hanover Township is Mountainous on its southern and rising to 2,148 feet at the summit of Haystack Mountain. Because of the elevation this area is susceptible to frigid temperatures. With the cold temperatures comes fire damage from malfunctioning furnaces and water damage from frozen burst pipes. During the spring and fall rainy seasons, it is not uncommon for the runoff from the mountain to make its way to the Solomon Creek, which snakes its way through the northern end of the township where most of the homes and businesses are located. When this happens the creek swells causing water damage and flooded basements, usually from failing sump pumps. The northern end of Hanover Township is also bordered by the Susquehanna River. In September of 2011, Tropical Storm Lee dumped 13 inches of rain on Hanover Township and Northeastern PA, causing massive flooding and storm damage. Businesses and homes sustained major fire damage, water damage, and mold damage from this storm.
