Newberg is a city in Yamhill County, Oregon. Located in the Portland metropolitan area, the city is home to George Fox University.
Newberg was one of the first communities in Oregon to hold Religious Society of Friends (Quaker) meetings. The Friends established the Friends Pacific Academy in 1889, renaming it Pacific College in 1891, then George Fox University in 1949. Throughout the name changes, the institution has earned accolades for its high-quality education; it is one of the “best value” schools in higher education.
One of the first students to attend the academic in its first incarnation was a young Herbert Hoover. Hoover moved to the city in 1885 after his parents; he lived with his aunt and uncle; their home is now the Hoover-Minthorn House Museum.
The university is far from Newberg’s only highlight. It is a center for llama breeding in the Pacific Northwest, home to Ewing Young Historical Park, and – as part of the Portland Metropolitan area – an increasingly popular place to live.
