South Zanesville's history dates all the way back to the pioneer days and is the only town in the county to date back this far. Today, you can go to the south end of Main Street to see where the Old Merriam Farm was that started South Zanesville. Merriam referred to his farm as Shawnee Farm because of the Shawnee Native Americans who once roamed the area. You can even find Native American artifacts in the area like arrowheads. The town has continued to grow since the 1800's due to its expansive lands, resources, and great real estate. Perhaps one of the most unique sites in the area is the US Post Office and Federal Building on South Street and 5th with its sprawling vines and extravagant architecture.
