Darrtown Cleanup and Restoration

Darrtown is a small community located between Hamilton and Oxford in Butler county Ohio. Home of the Hitching Post the oldest Saloon in Ohio established in 1817 by Conrad Darr. Home to the Medallion a former Inn built in the early 1920's Darrtown was a stop for many people passing through. No longer in operation the building still stands across from the aforementioned Hitching Post. There is a great farm and blacksmith feel as you pass through the center of town leaving you thinking of years past. Due to the rural setting of Darrtown a majority of the homes have septic systems in leu of government maintained sewage lines. Septic system maintenance is a requirement to prevent water damage due to a sewage backup. Minor additives throughout the year may be needed as well as the occasional pumping out of your septic tank. On top of septic systems back many years ago these homes would have had a cistern to collect water for consumption and domestic purposes. Often times a cistern would be a room in the basement or just adjacent to the basement underground. If poor quality construction or inferior building materials were used cisterns could easily be a source of a water damage. This day and age not many people use this method of water storage for many reasons healthy drinking water being the primary. In 1930 an early morning fire at the Wyckoff residence was reported, with the nearest fire department being nearly 30 minutes away the townsfolk rallied together to form a bucket brigade and did heroic work to gain control of the fire. When the Oxford fire department arrived they quickly moved into action extinguishing the remaining flames. With the combined efforts of the Darrtown community and Oxford fire department the majority of the home was saved from fire damage. A great takeaway from this is that many hand make for light work.
