The storm of 1938 has washed up so much sand that the Cedar Point Lighthouse, which had been on an island, became connected to the mainland. The 1954 storm also toppled the MacKay Radio.  East Hampton is regularly hit by hurricanes and Nor'easters.   • Turn off utilities: If instructed by local authorities or if floodwaters are imminent, turn off electricity, gas, and water supplies at their main sources to prevent potential hazards. Prepare for power outages.
  • Prepare an emergency kit: Assemble an emergency kit. Have a generator handy with fuel, use generators outdoors and follow safety guidelines.
