An Interesting Township With An Odd Place in Aviation History
Tabernacle was on of the townships that made up an area that was originally known as Northampton Township. Today it is divided to include parts known as Tabernacle, Southampton, Shamong and Woodland Townships. In 1873 Joseph Wharton purchased a large portion of the township. In March of 1901 Tabernacle Township was incorporated by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature. The community was originally known as "Tabernacle In The Wilderness" because of the establishment of a log church by a missionary named John Brainerd. The church is no longer there, but Tabernacle is still an interesting place to visit. One popular destination in Tabernacle is the Carranza Memorial. The memorial was dedicated in 1928 as a way to remember a famous Mexican pilot that was an international hero. Mexican aviator Captain Emilio Carranza Rodríguez was selected to complete a flight from Mexico City to New York City in response to the 1927 flight from New York City to Mexico City by American aviator Charles Lindbergh. Unfortunately, while flying back to Mexico in July 1928 Carranza's plane got caught in a thunderstorm over the New Jersey Pinelands and crashed.
