Brookline, chartered initially in 1769 as "Raby" and renamed in 1796, became a powerhouse of ice harvesting in the late 19th century. Beginning around 1890, the Fresh Pond Ice Company established massive operations on Lake Potanipo (then known as Muscatanapus), constructing a complex of 13 icehouses with a storage capacity of around 120,000 tons and employing over 200 workers. The industry thrived until the 1935 fire destroyed the icehouses, and the onset of electric refrigeration rendered the trade obsolete.
