Waynesboro, MS is located along the Alabama border in southeastern Mississippi.  The city started out with the name Mount Vernon in 1797, then constructed as the town of Waynesburg in 1818 and lastly updated to Waynesboro in 1831. The town was named after General Mad Anthony Wayne who served in the United States Army. The layout of the town was around the first expressway which was built between Baltimore and Pittsburg in 1816, and became the county seat in 1870. The 1900’s brought dramatic growth of the timber industry for most of the area’s industrial development. In the 1940’s the economy started to boom with the discovery of oil in Waynesboro that caused them to double in size by the 1950’s. Despite its small size, Waynesboro had several great athletes such as, Jeff Branson, Paul Busby, Spencer Johnson and Benito Jones. History is not the only thing to catch your attention about Waynesboro, the amenities and venues offer outstanding family recreational opportunities from the Maynor Creek Water Park, to the Chickasawhay River and the three parks throughout the town. The town will spark your interest!
