Vidalia: City on the Move 

Vidalia is located along the bank of the Mississippi River and was first established by Don José Vidal, for whom the city gets its name. The city earned its nickname, “City on the Move” in 1938 when the entire city had to be relocated a mile inland to allow for the widening of the river. Vidalia is also where the Sandbar Duel took place, which made Jim Bowie famous. This duel is commemorated every year in September at the Jim Bowie Festival and BBQ Challenge. Visitors can also enjoy watching the riverboats float down the river at destinations such as Riverfront Royale Salon and Spa.
