Like many other southern towns, Summit too was originally a railroad town. A fun fact about the area is that the name was originally acquired from the thought of being the highest point on the Illinois Central Railroad between New Orleans and Jackson, Tennessee. But, it was later discovered that it's actually Brookhaven instead. Though it may not be geographically the highest spot, that doesn't affect the community's high spirits. One of the most popular events for this city is the annual Smokin' on the Tracks, bringing in people all over south Mississippi to enjoy live music, artists booths, food vendors, car shows and the popular BBQ cook-off. This event not only brings communities together, but it also helps benefit these foundations: SW MS CAC, PALS, Flos Angels, MICA, Greater Hope Homeless Shelter, and SW MS Crisis Pregnancy Center. There are other community events such as the Mardi Gras Festival that parades downtown on Robb Street, Fall Fest every second Saturday in October and the Christmas Parade every first Monday in December.
This town also contributes to bettering the environment. The local plastic recycling center, Summit Plastics Inc., converts our scrap back into useful pellets to then be used back into the manufacturing process, therefore reducing waste. Located about a mile east of this town and four miles south of McComb is Southwest Mississippi Community College, providing cost friendly and positive academic opportunities to obtain an associate degree or certificate. You will see the Bears walking around wearing their red and blue school colors with pride.
From the hometown feels, local businesses, community events, and education opportunities, there is so much to love about Summit.
