Raleigh, MS is located on the edge of the Piney Woods region in south-central Mississippi and was named after an American Revolution hero named Maj. David Smith. The towns name soon changed when the county seat was moved to Raleigh in 1834, thus being named after Sir Walter Raleigh. The courthouse is the main focal point of the town, which is where a veteran’s memorial stands recognizing the veterans from Smith County who served in WWI, WWII, The Korean War, and the Vietnam War. There is quite a bit of history to learn about in the town of Raleigh, such as, being home to Governor Robert Lowry, Governor/U.S Senator Anselm McLaurin and pioneer William H. Hardy. There was a famous hotel called the Harrison Hotel that hosted Theodore G Bilbo and Jefferson Davis. When you need a change of pace, you can ease over to the Tullos Park and spend the day watching the children sliding, playing, swinging, and enjoying life! Also, if you like hiking, fishing, hunting, and camping ease to the Bienville Nation Forest and enjoy the fresh air! Raleigh is small, but they take pride in their town!
