Prentiss, MS started out as a thriving river port in the 1800’s and by the 1870’s it was swallowed by the mighty Mississippi River and disappeared forever... If you look at the map now, Prentiss is in Jefferson Davis County and the county seat of Lawrence County. The town was first named “Blountville” after William Blount.  They completed a depot in Blountville in 1903 and the town was officially established and named “Prentiss” after a prominent landowner Prentiss Webb Berry. Prentiss was Mississippi’s first recreational rail trail and a town with notable people from a boxer Toxey Hall, a NBA player Al Jefferson and the first African American Professor known as Charles Magee. Prentiss may not be as popular as other places, but the Longleaf Trace Prentiss Gateway is a great place to take a walk and enjoy nature and Williams’ Good Old Days Buffet to feed your appetite! You should visit the area and take a break from life’s struggles and just relax!
