Osyka, MS is a small town just north of the Louisiana boarder at the southern edge of Pike County. Local legend says the town’s name comes from a Choctaw princess and means “soaring eagle”. This town was a commercial hub for cotton, as it was built on the railroad line in 1854 and charted in 1858. The founder’s name was Jesse Redmond, as he later fought with Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans.

A historical landmark in the area is the Jewish Cemetery of Osyka, which is right near the bustling traffic of Interstate 55. The cemetery was abandoned and existed under the rumble of tombstones for many years until recently, as the community came together to begin restoring a part of the area’s history. Another place of preserving history is the Osyka Veterans Park. The park is a beautiful park that pays tribute to all the local soldiers that stood up for our country’s freedom.

During times of hardships from epidemics from the past, the town continued development and local businesses supplying required items for the community. This town has seen its time of hardship with weather, as 54 hurricanes have been recorded to hit the area since 1930. Hurricane Katrina was the largest to devastate the area, and the most recent being hurricane Isaac in 2012.
