Meadville – Chess Country  

Meadville is situated in the southwest corner of Mississippi, just north of the Homochitto River. Surrounded by the Homochitto National Forest, the town began as an agricultural trading center for the county and was largely settled by farmers. Today, this area remains mostly rural and has a population of about 500 people. 

In March of 2017 Meadville was featured in a story on the CBS news magazine 60 Minutes. The segment, entitled Chess Country, told the story of Dr. Jeff Bulington, a teacher from Memphis who moved into a local school to teach the students chess. While his chess program was originally met with some skepticism, it gained popularity in the area and some of the students went on to compete in the Mississippi State Championships.
