By the banks of the Pearl River, this town was name Lott’s Bluff after being founded in the early 1800’s. Today, you can still see the historic downtown buildings as they have a new life. The community is rich with activity and attractions, as the town hosts many events.
One of the largest and most popular in Mississippi is their annual Christmas celebration, as the entire downtown transforms into a winter wonderland for the whole month of December, which is traditionally brought forth by "Experience Columbia". There is a makeover of the town with décor, lights, and music. The festivities consist of a parade, carnival rides, a Grinch train, local shopping, food trucks, a live nativity performance and ice skating. There has even been Cheers & beers wine tasting events for those needing to unwind for the holidays. But for a true Hallmark experience, the "Honest Island Clydesdales" carriage rides happen along Main Street, as the proceeds benefit the Fire Dept. In the past, this huge attraction has brought in 300K visitors.
Besides Christmas, there are many local activities that make Columbia, MS so special. For Easter, the town has a parade and egg hunt for the local youth to enjoy. The community also gathers for the "Makers & Mudbugs" festival, enjoying crawfish and local makers on Second Street. People gather downtown enjoying music and food for the “2nd Saturday Summer Concert” on 2nd Street West of Main every second Saturday. That event wraps up with the annual “Columbia Food and Music Festival” on Labor Day Weekend. The “Heritage Festival” features arts, crafts, food, and music every 1st Saturday of October. Other local attractions are the Southern Museum of Natural History, Marion County Historical Museum and Archives and the Ever Green Market. For outside fun, the Columbia Water Park has a Disc Golf course and boat access to Pearl River. There truly are so many opportunities to appreciate this great town.
