University City, Missouri is an inner ring suburb of St. Louis named after Washington University. The population was around 35,000 as of 2020. It is one of the older suburbs of St. Louis, and still contains much of the historic architecture. University City was a streetcar suburb in the late 19th and early 20th century, and the southern part of the city still reflects some of that history. The northern part of University City has a more suburban feel as it was developed more after the introduction of automobiles.
Temperatures in University City, Missouri can vary wildly from one day to the next. Although freezing temperatures are common during the winter months and extremely hot days may occur in the summertime, most of the time (it's just right). Despite its reputation for heavy rainfall, University City receives less rain on average than cities such as New Orleans and Seattle.
History of University City
The community started out as an agrarian society. In the early 1900's Edward Gardner Lewis purchase some land right outside of St. Louis. This land eventually became Lewis Publishing-- the company that publishes Woman's Magazine and Woman's Farm Journal-- beginning with the ground breaking in 1903.
The city was officially incorporated in 1906 and Lewis was elected its first mayor.
