The town was founded by Michael Murphy in 1835, who came from Ireland to make his living as a merchant and landowner. His home still stands today, though it has been restored several times after fires destroyed parts of it. Some of the first settlers passed through the area as they made their way to California during the gold rush of 1849 as well.
