Hillsboro, Missouri, was originally called Monticello, named after Monticello, home of President Thomas Jefferson. The present name Hillsboro is the English equivalent of the Italian name Monticello. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has preserved the Sandy Creek Covered Bridge, built in 1872. The bridge is one of four remaining covered bridges in Missouri, which once numbered about 30.
