The small town of Hawley went through six different name changes from 1871 to 1872, when it was finally named after Thomas Hawley Canfield, who was an officer for Northern Pacific Railway. The different names were Reno’s Camp, Buffalo Crossing, Muskoday, Bethel or New Bethel, Hawley (the first time), Yeovil or New Yeovil and Hawley. Talk about confusing for the residents of the town! 

Today, the population of Hawley is 2,219 according to the 2020 census. While the town is still pretty small, there is a lot more to do than there was one hundred and fifty years ago. The town features a bowling alley called Hawley Lanes, Sanctuary Event Center and the Hawley Golf and Country Club! The town also has a few great bars and restaurants including The Spot Lite Bar, Whistle Stop and Jimmy’s Pizza.

In 2007, the town ran a campaign called “Hawley Would” which was a homophonic play on words for Hollywood. The campaign was to showcase that Hawley was a small town near a large city, as Hawley is only twenty two minutes from downtown Fargo. A very clever ad campaign that gave the town some attention!
