In 1883, the town of Richardson was established by the Northern Pacific Railroad as a station. A year later the town was renamed Dilworth, in honor of director of Northern Pacific Railway and coffee importer, Joseph Dilworth of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dilworth was a fairly small town, having only two grain elevators and no station. That is until 1906, when Northern Pacific came in and bought five hundred acres of land for their headquarters. The headquarters featured a large roundhouse that acted like a lazy susan for trains. The locomotive was then brought into one of the 45 stalls for repairs and refitting. It was quite the operation and gave the town a big name in the area.

According to the 2020 census, the population of Dilworth is 4,612. Dilworth is located just east of Moorhead, Minnesota. Dilworth has an elementary school and their middle and high school is located in the nearby town of Glyndon. The high school is combined with three towns: Dilworth, Glyndon and Felton, otherwise known as D-G-F. Dilworth has a great bar and grill called The Hill Bar and Grill.
