In 1874, Barnesville was founded after the Great Northern Railroad was planned and finished in 1877. In 1908, after the major success with wheat crop, people realized that there needed to be more crop diversity. This brought the farmers of Barnesville to begin raising the Ohio seed potato. The crop thrived and continues to thrive in the community. It even began a tradition in the town known to be Potato Days Festival, attracting around 21,000 people each year.

There are many great attractions in Barnesville including Kava Family Splash Pad, Willow Creek Golf Club and Blue Eagle Lake. Blue Eagle Lake is a man made lake that was originally a part of a WPA project in the 1930s. The lake has become a favorite attraction for many Barnesville residents. With features including a sandy beach, nearby playground and beach volleyball nets, it is a great way to spend your day in the summer!

After a long day at Blue Eagle Lake, stop and get a bite to eat at one of the restaurants in town. A few great options are the Purple Goose Eatery and Drinkery, The Pitchfork or Dee’s Drive Inn. With Barnesville being such a small town of only a little over two thousand people, there is a lot to do!
