Salem Township was founded in 1826 when the first settlers came from Salem New York. It began as a farming community and has managed to retain that rural character, which the residents cherish.

Salem Township invites you to visit one the their many preserved properties. The Salem Township Farm Preserve is 235 acres of rolling landscapes with its numerous marked pathways that are open from dawn to dusk. The Shatter Family Preserve has 25 acres of mature woodland and wetland complexes and trails. You can also explore the Salem Walker Cemetery or the John Wesley Conant House. If golfing is more your thing, there are 8 golf courses within 10 miles.

Salem Township may not be a big area, approximately 35 square miles, but congressman Melbourne H Ford was born there in 1849 and served from 1887 to 1889. Also born in Salem Township was singer Barbara Lewis, her hit "Baby I'm Yours" was on the soundtrack for "The Bridges of Madison County" in 1995 and "Hello Stranger" in 2016. She was inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
