Canton, or officially the Charter Township of Canton, is located in Wayne County Michigan. Canton is the second most-populated township in Michigan and is located approximately 40 miles west of Detroit and 30 miles north of Ann Arbor.

Canton began its history as Sheldon Corners in 1825. Today not much is left of Sheldon Corners except the completely restored Sheldon Corners School, which is listed on the Michigan State historic site. Canton, which was named after a city in China in 1834, is a thriving community of over 98,000 residents. Most of Canton's settlers came from New England and the placed a strong emphasis on education, building nine school districts. The families in each district built and equipped the schools, paid a "tax" for each child and donated a cord of wood for the school stove. Once a farming community, that from 1925 to 1970, was known as the "Sweet Corn Capital of Michigan" due to the number of farms that provided corn to the area's major grocery stores. Canton's commercial development began in the late 1970's and exploded after 2005 when IKEA announced it would locate its only Michigan store just off I-75. Every Thanksgiving morning Canton holds it annual Turkey Trot to support the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan. This Thanksgiving will be the 20th year that the participants will cover a picturesque flat course that runs through Pleasant Run Golf Course, Heritage Park and ends back at the Summit on the Park.
