University Park is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, it was developed on land owned by the Deakins family since the mid-1700s. The farm was purchased by developers in the 1920's. The size of the small community nearly doubled between 1940 and 1950, with the construction of another 255 houses. The community park was designed and developed in the early 1950s to include a sunken garden, trails, a playground, tennis courts, and picnic area. Today the town remains without commercial properties. In 1997 the University Park Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The University of Maryland, College Park campus is just beyond the border of the neighborhood. There are several notable people that called University Park home. The creator of The Muppets, Jim Henson, grew up in University Park.
