Langley Park, Maryland is located inside the Capital Beltway in Prince George's County. The area is named after an estate that was established in the community in 1923. The original property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 29, 2008. After World War II the estate was subdivided and was developed as a planned community. In 1949, a large garden apartment complex, Langley Park Apartments, was built to house the growing postwar population. The area continued to grow, in 1951, plans were unveiled for $4 million shopping center. Langley Park was the fastest growing trade area in Metropolitan Washington in 1955. Today there are a lot of shopping choices in the area, the two biggest shopping centers are the Langley Park Plaza and the other is known as the Langley Park Shopping Center. Langley Park Plaza was once the second largest strip mall in Maryland. Starting in 1999 every year the Langley Park Day is held featuring festivities as well as health screenings.
