The Real Cost of Moisture and Smoke Damage in Drum Point Homes A damp crawl space may not look urgent at first. A faint smoke smell after a small kitchen flare-up may seem like something that will fade. Yet these early signs can lead to bigger consequences for your structure, indoor air, and belongings. In Drum Point, MD, where homes sit near the meeting point of the Patuxent River and the Chesapeake Bay, moisture and smoke deserve prompt attention. Why Consequences Matter More Than the Initial Event A leak, storm opening, appliance failure, or minor fire is only the beginning. The larger concern is what happens next. Moisture can settle beneath flooring, move into wall cavities, and create conditions for mold growth. Smoke can cling to porous surfaces and spread through rooms that never had flames. Water damage restoration helps address the full path of moisture, not just the visible wet area. That includes checking affected materials, drying hidden spaces, and reducing conditions that allow odors or microbial growth to develop. Fire damage restoration follows a similar principle. The burned item may be obvious, but soot, residue, and odor can affect cabinets, vents, clothing, furniture, and adjoining rooms. Local Waterfront Conditions Can Slow Recovery Drum Point, MD is closely tied to the historic Drum Point Lighthouse, an 1883 screwpile cottage-type lighthouse now on display at the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons. The museum notes that the lighthouse dominates its waterfront setting, reflecting the area’s long relationship with the Patuxent River and Chesapeake Bay. That same waterfront character shapes local property risks. Humid air, heavy rain, shaded lots, and saturated soil can make building materials dry more slowly. After storms, you should inspect crawl spaces, lower-level rooms, exterior doors, utility areas, and storage spaces for signs of dampness. How Mold and Odor Problems Develop Mold concerns often begin where air circulation is poor. Closets, crawl spaces, wall cavities, and areas behind furniture can hold moisture longer than open rooms. A musty odor can mean the problem has already moved beyond the surface. Smoke odor behaves differently but can be just as persistent. It can settle into textiles, drywall, wood, and HVAC systems. Ordinary air fresheners may mask the smell, but they will not remove residue. Professional water damage restoration and fire damage restoration help address these underlying problems. SERVPRO of Calvert County can assess moisture, smoke, soot, and damaged materials so the cleanup is matched to the condition of your property. Steps You Can Take Before Damage Spreads Check gutters and downspouts before strong weather patterns arrive. Keep storage off crawl space floors. Inspect appliance hoses and water heater areas. Clean dryer vents. Keep grills away from siding and railings. Test smoke alarms and make sure family members know how to respond to a fire. Small actions can reduce the severity of a loss. They also help you notice changes quickly. Restoration Protects More Than Surfaces Property damage is stressful because it interrupts daily life and raises concerns about safety. Acting early gives you a better chance of limiting repairs, protecting belongings, and restoring comfort. For homeowners near the water, fire damage restoration and water damage restoration are about more than cleanup. They help protect the parts of your home you see every day and the hidden spaces that keep it sound.
Services We Provide
What our Drum Point customers are saying
I could go on and on how wonderful SERVPRO is and has been for my family and I. You all made a hectic, crazy time due to an accident in our home SOOOO much better and easier to deal with. From Frank who took care of us so very well after the accident to Eddie who finished up in our home! Tracy in the office was also so very helpful, professional and kind. Thank you so much to all who came to our rescue, worked crazy hours, answered a ton of questions, offered advice and gave professional care and kindness to every detail. We appreciate you and thank you so much. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
As we prepared to list our house in August 2015, we were in a time crunch to have our carpets cleaned. Chad responded quickly and personally came out to give us a quote, and they fit us into their schedule quickly. Our previous 2 carpet cleanings in 8 years were no where near the response time, and quality cleaning of SERVPRO. Thanks SERVPRO - I highly recommend you, and we will use you again!
I have used SERVPRO of Saint Mary's and Calvert many times over the years for carpet cleaning and duct cleaning. I have always been very pleased with the customer service and cleaning results.
My wife and I want you to know of our appreciation for the tremendous service offered by members of your Company.
Earlier this year we had a misfortune of having the interior of our house and its contents covered with soot from a malfunctioning fuel oil furnace. SERVPRO cleaned the walls, ceilings, floors, doors and some of the contents May 7-9. SERVPRO members involved in the cleanup were:
Todd, Frank, Jon, Tommy and Eddie
All five of them were very professional. They reviewed with us in detail the work to be done and were proactive in suggesting that painting certain parts of the house are necessary when they were doing the remediation. All five of the employees seemed to know what to do and when to do it. They were thorough in their cleaning, while, at the same time being courteous and pleasant. My wife and I were amazed at how meticulous and helpful they were in the cleaning process.
This is our first major experience with SERVPRO. (We had used SERVPRO years ago {Eddie} to clean our HVAC ducts, which was also a favorable experience.) We are happily relating to our friends how SERVPRO came to our rescue in dealing with the soot issue.
Sincerely yours,
Michael J.
I have to say that dealing with SERVPRO was absolutely seamless. From the initial call, to the site visit, and through the three days of cleaning, I couldn't have asked for a better crew. Robby was outstanding, and made sure all of our needs were met with ease. Thanks again for the great work everyone!
SERVPRO blasted my crawlspace when I bought the house, and it made an immediate difference with smell in the house. If you have a moldy crawlspace this is a must, really a no brainer! The wood still looks new almost 10 years later.
After a few years of normal wear and tear, SERVPRO came in and did a phenomenal job steam cleaning our carpets. They were rejuvenated to look like new! The crew was efficient and friendly, and the cleaning cost very affordable. Highly recommend.
