History of Norton

Norton Massachusetts is a town located on the eastern side of the Merrimack River in Middlesex County. It is known for being home to some of the most valuable salt-manufacturing companies, including Atkins and Cabot. It is located on the shores of Lake Quinsigamond and has been recently named one of America's best small towns by Bloomberg News. The town was formed by Royal Charter in 1680 and named for John Norton who signed the charter with some friends. Today, Norton is still a vibrant community full of life and laughter. This small town enjoys its festivals, outdoor activities and beautiful scenery that includes many farms and vineyards.

The town was first settled by Europeans in 1639 by an expedition led by John Haynes and Thomas Parker. They moved to the area to provide security and protection for local Native Americans who were being pressured out of their fishing grounds by stronger tribes. Norton is just north of New Hampshire and borders to the south western part of Ashland, which is a town in Merrimack. The population of Norton has been nearly steady at around 15,000 people throughout most of its history. The first settlers in Norton were from New Hampshire; however, there were some English immigrants as well.
