Laid out on a plat in 1805, but not recorded until 1837, the town plan included six blocks along the river and two blocks back. This same plat is still used for the location of lots in Smithland. In its early days, the town had a reputation for being a lusty, brawling river town, full of unsavory characters. 

Smithland, the seat of Livingston County, is located on the Ohio River at the mouth of the Cumberland River. It is served by US 60. An earlier settlement called Smithland was established below the current site in 1780, but by 1800 had moved to the current location and was chartered in 1805. It was named to honor James Smith, an early explorer of the area. The seat of Livingston county was moved several times; in 1841 it was moved to Smithland from Salem. Smithland was incorporated in 1843. The Smithland post office opened in 1802. The population in 2010 was 301.


The old Livingston county courthouse in Smithland was built in 1845. The new courthouse is a few blocks away. The Gower House, an inn on the Ohio River in Smithland, was built about 1780. Smithland is a home rule-class city in Livingston County, Kentucky, United States, at the confluence of the Ohio and Cumberland Rivers. The population was 301 at the 2010 census, a drop from 401 in 2000. It is the county seat of Livingston County. Location of Smithland in Livingston County, Kentucky.
