Kirksey Cleanup and Restoration

Kirksey is a small unincorporated community located in Calloway County in far western Kentucky. Situated along Kentucky Route 299, Kirksey lies approximately 8 miles southwest of Murray and just a short drive from the Tennessee state line. Surrounded by rolling farmland and scenic countryside, the community offers a peaceful rural lifestyle while remaining close to the conveniences of Murray, making it an attractive place for families, retirees, and those who appreciate country living.

The community has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. A post office was established in 1871 by Stephen Franklin Kirksey, for whom the community was named. Before receiving its current name, residents had suggested names such as Reedville and Rosedale, but the postmaster ultimately submitted his own surname to the U.S. Postal Service. The area quickly became a gathering place for local farming families and served as an important rural community for surrounding agricultural operations.

Agriculture continues to play an important role in Kirksey's economy. Farms producing corn, soybeans, wheat, tobacco, and livestock surround the community, while many residents also commute to nearby Murray for employment in healthcare, education, manufacturing, retail, and other industries. The presence of Murray State University provides additional educational, cultural, and economic opportunities for the region.

Students in Kirksey are served by the Calloway County School District, which is recognized for its strong academic programs, athletics, and extracurricular activities. Historically, the community was home to Kirksey High School, one of several local schools that later consolidated to form Calloway County High School in 1960. Today, the district continues to serve families throughout the county with a reputation for educational excellence.

Outdoor recreation is one of Kirksey's greatest advantages. Residents are only minutes from Kentucky Lake, one of the largest man-made lakes in the eastern United States, as well as the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. The nearby lakes also attract thousands of visitors annually, supporting tourism throughout the region.
