Gilbertsville is a small unincorporated community and census-designated place located in Marshall County in western Kentucky. Situated along Kentucky Route 282 near the western end of Kentucky Lake, Gilbertsville is best known as the community closest to Kentucky Dam, one of the Tennessee Valley Authority's most significant engineering projects. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Gilbertsville had a population of 332 residents. Despite its small size, the community welcomes thousands of visitors each year thanks to its location at one of Kentucky's premier outdoor recreation destinations.
Gilbertsville has a fascinating history that is closely tied to the construction of Kentucky Dam. The original town was established in 1871 under the name Clear Pond before being renamed Gilbertsville in honor of Kentucky State Senator Jesse C. Gilbert. When the Tennessee Valley Authority began building Kentucky Dam between 1938 and 1944, the original town was located in the area that would become Kentucky Lake. Rather than disappear, the community was relocated to its current location, preserving its identity while making way for one of the largest public works projects in the region. President Harry S. Truman later dedicated Kentucky Dam during a ceremony held nearby in 1945.
Today, tourism is the primary driver of Gilbertsville's economy. The community serves as a gateway to Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park, where visitors enjoy boating, fishing, camping, hiking, golfing, and beautiful lake views. Nearby marinas provide easy access to Kentucky Lake, one of the nation's top destinations for bass and crappie fishing, while the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is only minutes away, offering hundreds of miles of trails, campgrounds, wildlife viewing, and outdoor adventures.
Gilbertsville also hosts several annual events that attract visitors from across the region, including arts and crafts festivals, fishing tournaments, and outdoor recreation activities centered around Kentucky Lake. Its proximity to Interstate 24/69 makes it easily accessible for travelers exploring western Kentucky.
