Burna is a small rural community and census-designated place in central Livingston County, Kentucky. Located along U.S. Highway 60, it sits approximately 7 miles east of Salem and 8 miles northeast of Smithland, the county seat. With a population of 219 residents according to the 2020 U.S. Census, Burna offers a quiet, close-knit atmosphere where neighbors know one another and life moves at a relaxed pace.
The community's name has an interesting local story. When residents needed a name for the new post office in the early 1900s, a naming contest was held, and the winning entry was "Burna," named after a young local girl. The town developed as a stop along U.S. Highway 60, with businesses such as grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, and a barber shop serving travelers and residents throughout much of the 20th century. Today, while many of those businesses have disappeared, Burna continues to serve as an important residential and educational center for the surrounding rural area.
Education plays a significant role in the community. Burna is home to North Livingston Elementary School and Livingston County Middle School, making it a central location for families throughout northern Livingston County. Students typically continue their education at Livingston Central High School in nearby Smithland.
Residents enjoy easy access to some of western Kentucky's best outdoor recreation. Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkley, and the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area are all within a short drive, providing opportunities for boating, fishing, camping, hiking, wildlife viewing, and hunting. The surrounding countryside is also known for its scenic farmland and peaceful landscapes.
Although Burna is a small community, essential services, healthcare, shopping, and dining are available in nearby Salem, Smithland, and the larger city of Paducah, about 30 miles away. Agriculture, education, healthcare, and manufacturing in surrounding communities provide many local employment opportunities.
