Richland, KS is now considered a ghost town just outside of the state capital, located in north eastern Kansas and founded in 1854. Richland is situated near Camp Creek and the Wakarusa River. At one point, the town was the center of a rich agricultural region- a post office was opened in 1857 followed shortly after by a bank, several shops and lodges, a church, a hotel, and two doctors offices. There was a train station located in town for a brief period until the railroad until the railroad stopped running in 1894. In October of 1903 the annual Richland Street Fair was started. The fair included activities like games and talent shows, as well as parades. The post office in Richland was closed in 1969 and the last of the town was abandoned and leveled in 1974. Not much remains of Richland anymore- the ruins of some buildings and paved streets and the cemetery are all that is left of what once was an almost 300 person town. Most of the town site is located on land owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The land was acquired for the flood plain of Clinton Lake.
