Mount Vernon Indiana is a wonderful community that is located in Posey County. As of the 2010 census it has 6,687 people. The city was named after General Thomas Posey who was the Governor of the Indiana Territory. However, it was originally called McFaden's Bluff as the first settler was Andrew McFaden in 1806. The post office was officially opened and began operation in 1818.
Mount Vernon has many historical sites that have been placed on the national register of historic places. A few of those are the Posey County Courthouse square, the Welborn Historic District, and the William Gonnerman House. Another thing that Mount Vernon is known for is their Industry District. It houses two biofuel plants called Abengoa of Indiana and Aventine Renewable Energy. These two places are what have created Mount Vernon as being a vital energy exporter.
The city has many schools including Mount Vernon Senior High school, Mount Vernon Junior High school, Farmersville Elementary school, Marrs Elementary School, West Elementary School, and St. Matthews School. It also houses the Alexandrian Public Library which was built in 1986.
