Griffin Indiana is a small town located in Posey County. The 2010 census was 172 people. Griffin was originally called Price's Station. But the name changed to Griffin because of an early postmaster named Samuel Griffin. Children that live in Griffin Indiana go to school at a nearby community in the North Posey County school district. In 1972 the town held an outdoor rock concert called the Erie Canal Soda Pop festival, it was located in Griffin on "Bull Island" which is located on a strip of land that is shared by Griffin and Illinois. It is estimated that 200,000 to 300,000 people attended this event. This event lasted three days and made quite the chaos in the small town.
The Tri-state tornado unfortunately destroyed the town in 1925 killing 44 people and injuring over 200. The tornado was a horrific event but many people saw the community come together and build the town back even stronger. We have seen time and time again, disasters strike and communities join together like never before. There is something to be said about the kind and generous people in small communities that work together to help a neighbor and friend in need. That is exactly what happened in Griffin.
