Stronghurst, IL got to be known as the “Magic City” when a stop on a line from the Chicago, Santa Fe, and California Railway Company was built there in 1887. Businesses and homes seemed to appear out of nowhere as more and more residents wished to live near a stop on the line. Apart from the increased industry that came along with the railway stop, Stronghurst also saw a boom in cultural activity as the famous Chautauqua caravan made its yearly stop, which transported lectures, music, preachers, and people of interest from all walks of life to Stronghurst and other communities across the nation.

Stronghurst is also home to the Henderson County Fair which started in 1934 and lasts a full week. The fair features livestock and agriculture shows as well as tractor pulls, races, and activities for the whole family.
