For a period of time starting in 1867, Industry, IL was the largest town in a ten-mile radius. It had no major rail lines passing through, but it did once share the Macomb, Industry & Littleton Railway, a locally-owned electric train that transported passengers, made deliveries, and served its communities at a moment’s notice. This position made Industry a destination for the surrounding rural areas which sprouted many businesses there.

While there were several mills in the heyday of Industry’s prosperity, the one that remains standing wasn’t used for milling grain. Ralph Sweringen’s Old Mill Tourist Camp opened in 1927 to attract visitors to enjoy its cabins and restaurant. It has since closed, but the windmill remains as a reminder of Industry’s past glories as a tourist destination and industrial excellence.
