Galesburg’s beginnings as a destination for anti-slavery discussion and action set the scene for a community with strong values and rich history. Located in Knox County, Galesburg is home to two colleges, approximately 32,000 residents, and is famously the hometown of poet Carl Sandburg and artist Dorothea Tanning.

Founded in 1837 by abolitionist George Washington Gale wishing to establish his own college, early settlers flocked to Galesburg to attend his college and have a part in assisting with the Underground Railroad. Galesburg was so synonymous with anti-slavery that it later became one of the premier forums of anti-slavery debate as the fifth Lincoln-Douglas debate was held at Knox College in 1858.

Since then, Galesburg has cemented itself as a central hub for the railroad industry in Illinois with railways supporting Amtrak and BNSF lines. The Railroad Days festival began in 1977 to celebrate the city’s past, present, and future railroad stories and memorabilia.
