Creve Coeur, IL marks one of the earliest settlements of Europeans in Illinois. Its namesake, Fort Crevecoeur, was erected by the French to support the Peoria tribe who were defending themselves against incoming Iroquois. The name means “broken heart” in English because during the construction of the fort, many troops attempted mutiny on the leader of the construction René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle and eventually deserted him.

The fort was soon destroyed and then later when settlers made their way back to the area, they named it after the famous fort. The current spelling “Creve Coeur” was established when one mayor erroneously believed that the original spelling was a mistake. The area that the fort once stood on is now the location of Creve Coeur’s public Park, Fort Creve Coeur Park.
