The area of present-day Bartonville was once the holdings of founder W.C.H. Barton who first came to Illinois in 1829. His holdings included over 1000 acres between the Illinois river and Kickapoo creek. Bartonville soon became a hot mining destination and European immigrants settled to mine in the hills and drink in the many saloons along the Illinois river. As Bartonville continued to grow, it was chosen as the site for the Peoria State Hospital, once known as the Illinois Hospital for the Incurable Insane. The hospital was open from 1902 to 1972, but tourists from around the country still make their way to the grounds to visit one of the most paranormal spaces in the Midwest.
