Interstate 15 cuts through miles and miles of farmland and rolling hills with towns few and far between. The sky can be full of looming thunderheads, heralding the imminent arrival of an approaching storm. On other days the sky is a dazzling blue.  There are no malls or chain grocery stores, few McDonald’s, or Denny's restaurants.  Just east of the highway, nestled in the hills of Southeast Idaho, is Downey.  A town of less than 700 people, it still has major charm and history.  You won’t find any chain stores, but you will find Thomas market and a post office.

The big draw to the area is the annual Bannock County Fair.  All of Southeastern Idaho gets together for this annual even to enjoy a rodeo, demolition derby, local food vendors, and 4-H exhibits.  Held in August, the fair may be the biggest event, but it’s not the only draw to the area.  Just down the road there’s a resort that would make any family reunion jealous at Downata Hot Springs.  Bring your tent or RV or rent a cabin.  You can even rent a covered wagon!  The hot springs are open year-round, and they have a pool, restaurant, and at night you can lay out and see the milky way since you’re far enough away from any city.
