Hanapepe – Kauai’s Biggest Little Town

The small town of Hanapepe is located on the south shore of Kauai, west of Koloa. Long ago Hanapepe was one of Kauai’s largest communities. From 1915 to the early 1950s, West Side Hanapepe had a steady influx of soldiers and sailors who were stationed there for training. Today, Kauai’s “biggest little town”, hasn’t changed much from a physical standpoint. Its historic buildings are so authentic that the town has been used as a movie location. “The Thorn Birds” and “Flight of the Intruder,” were both filmed in part in Hanapepe, and the town served as the model for the Disney film “Lilo and Stitch.”

Nine Art Galleries are in the town, including the Kalakoa Kauai Fine Art Gallery, the Troy Carney Gallery, and the Bright Side Gallery. As with most areas on Kauai, outdoor activities are abundant. Hanapepe boasts a unique attraction, The Hanapepe Swinging Bridge. The historic pedestrian suspension bridge offers visitors a unique and thrilling experience as they cross.

Many of the historic plantation homes in Hanapepe are for rent.
