A historic small town fishing village of about 10,000 people, Port Salerno is defined by the Manatee Pocket, a beautiful bay that extends from Port Salerno to the St. Lucie Inlet and is fed by several creeks including Salerno and Manatee Creek.  Originally this was the hub for the South Florida commercial fishing industry.  Port Salerno was founded in 1894 and known as “Salerno” and the "Port" was added in 1924. Apparently, the name was chosen by some of the earlier settlers who were from the Italian town of Salerno. The Manatee Pocket is well known by boaters as a natural "hurricane hole," as good a place to take shelter in a bad storm as any harbor along the east coast of Florida. 

Port Salerno still welcomes captains from around the world every year for world-class sport fishing tournaments that are based out of marinas and parks on the Manatee Pocket. The shoreline of Manatee Pocket is busy with fishing enterprises such as charter boats, commercial fishing boats, marinas, boatyards, and seafood restaurants. Many cruising yachts stay at the Manatee Pocket marinas during the winter and some stay year around.  Because of the area being surrounded by fishing related businesses, the Port Salerno Seafood Festival is held early each year along the public docks and neighborhood streets and brings visitors from afar.
