History of Naples

John Stuart Williams and his partner Walter N. Haldeman founded the city of Naples in 1886. Promoters said the area "surpassed" the beauty and abundance of fish of Naples, Italy. This is how the name came about.

In 1927, the Seaboard Air Line Railroad extended its reach. That same year, the Tamiami Trail linked Naples with Miami—two major paradigms of change that affected all levels of society in Southwest Florida.

Built during World War II as an airfield for the US Army Air Force, today Naples Municipal Airport is used almost exclusively by private pilots.
