Mandarin is an area located in south Jacksonville, in Duval County, north of Julington Creek and the Julington Durbin Creek Nature Preserve. In 1830, Calvin Read, a postmaster and prominent planter, "renamed the community after the Mandarin orange, which was introduced from China and was a major crop in the immediate area. Born in Vermont in 1788, Read like many other prominent families in the vicinity operated his land with enslaved labor, including seven souls listed as property of the Reads in the Slave Schedule of the 1850 United States Federal Census to cultivate Mandarin’s largest orange groves... Mandarin was officially incorporated as a municipality in 1841, during the midst of the Second Seminole War between Native Americans and formerly enslaved freedom seekers and the United States Army." -The Jaxson

Mandarin Flourished during reconstruction shipping oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and vegetables through Jacksonville on steamships up the St. Johns River. Harriott Beecher Stowe was Mandarin's most famous resident and encouraged others to travel to the area during the 17 winters she spent there. By the late 1800s, more than 900 of Mandarin's 1,200 residents were of African descent. There was a Catholic Church, a school, stores, and several boarding houses. Even though several freezes and the expansion of the railroad led to the fall of Mandarin's citrus production, the expansion of Jacksonville and the opening of the Buckman Bridge in the 1970s led to the Mandarin that most of us recognize today. Getting off the beaten path will surround you with live oaks covered with Spanish moss and 19th-century charm.

Mandarin has a diverse locally-owned restaurant scene. Some favorites include; Blue Bamboo, Picasso's, Enza's, Le Petit Paris, and Julington Creek Fish Camp.

SERVPRO is proud to provide Water Damage Restoration, Fire Damage Restoration, Mold Remediation, Trauma and Crime Scene clean-up, and Commercial Cleaning services in Mandarin.
