Grayton Beach is a small, historic beach village on the Florida Panhandle Gulf coast halfway between Destin and Panama City in Walton County. It is adjacent to Grayton Beach State Park. Floridians call the area “the Beaches of South Walton,” with South Walton referring to the southern portion of Walton County below the Choctawhatchee Bay. Most land north of County Road 30A in the Grayton Beach community is the state park.
At the beginning of the 20th century, there were no bridges over the southern parts of the Choctawhatchee River, and the roads were merely sandy trails that crossed miles of low-lying forests. Construction of Highway 98, the Highway 331 bridge, and the Intracoastal Waterway made Grayton Beach easier to reach in the 1930s. The Choctawhatchee Electric Cooperative brought electricity to the village in the 1940s, and in 1942, the U. S. Coast Guard established a 40-person station here, leading the federal government to rent many of the homes for barracks and offices.
Grayton Beach, therefore, changed from a hard-to-access backwater to a funky little beach town (as the tourist office claims). Grayton Beach is nestled inside Grayton Beach State Park, which may be the most beautiful beach in the United States.
