Freeport Cleanup and Restoration

Freeport, Florida is in Walton County, on the western part of Florida’s panhandle. It is near the junction of Four Mile Creek and Lafayette Creek, both of which empty out into LaGrange Bayou, which is connected to Choctawhatchee Bay. LaGrange Bayou is a natural harbor that, historians speculate, is what drew Europeans to stay in this area. 

The original (European) name was Genoa; it later became Four Mile Landing, and finally Freeport around 1830. Supposedly there was no charge to use the dock at Four Mile Creek and Lafayette Creek, so the free port became popular, and the name of the town became “Freeport.” While there is no evidence to support the claim, it makes a good anecdote.  

Many of the residents are either in the military or have some other connection to Eglin Air Force Base. 

Freeport residents have easy access to Destin and DeFuniak Springs as well as to other urban areas and to fishing, boating, hiking, and camping.
