Scottish-background settlers came to Walton from North Carolina; the “Scottish” part is relevant because “Bruce” was originally a Scottish surname that transformed into a Norman French given name. “Robert” and “Bruce” are related names; hence “Robert the Bruce” is a hearkening to the king’s nickname, not a description or a title.
