Atlantic Beach is the northernmost of Jacksonville's three beach cities, with Neptune Beach and then Jacksonville Beach to the south. It was established in 1899 when Henry Flagler built a railroad north to Mayport, where the St. Johns River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Atlantic Beach became a stop along that railroad and was simply named for its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean.

Atlantic Beach, FL has over 2 miles of white sand beaches, with numerous ocean access points for the public, as well as over 400 acres of marshland on the Intracoastal Waterway for hiking and paddling. Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park to the north provides an additional 1.2 miles of beaches consisting of one of the most popular surfing spots in Northeast Florida, The Poles. Hanna park also offers an additional 20 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, plazas for event rental, camping, and a 60-acre lake open to kayaks, canoes, fishing, and pedal boats.
